Authors Profile

Our thanks to Ms Esther Austin for providing us with this profile about and interview with Dr. Christopher Johnson.

Author’s Profile:

Dr. Christopher A. Johnson was born in British Guiana (now the Republic Guyana). He is a Business Management Consultant,
an academic, an author, a publisher and an award-winning journalist and editor. He has been involved in civic organisations for over 25 years. He is interested in human development, especially from a Caribbean perspective, as his credentials attest, yet he remains an exemplary symbol of humility.

Dr. Johnson specialises predominantly in the Caribbean Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) sector and has made an invaluable contribution to this area over the past 10 years. If one were to ask what drives this formidable man, it would be his desire and passion to help educate, support and further progress the development of universal society.

To date, his academic and professional achievements are formidable. He received his MBA at City Business College (London), was awarded a Management Science Fellow and received his PhD from Atlantic University College (Scotland) in Business Management respectively. Dr. Johnson’s profile on SMEs has appeared in newspapers and journals, and he has also undertaken numerous policy reviews on key industry sectors. He was awarded a Nuffield Press Fellowship at Wolfson College, Cambridge University in (1992/93) and was the first Guyanese recipient of the Common Purpose Award by Coopers & Lybrand (1995/96). He was also among the 500 Achievers in the UK’s Black Who’s Who (1999).

Dr. Johnson recently published the first ever book on the British Caribbean firms’ sector, spanning 100 years and covering over 200 case studies. British Caribbean Enterprises examines key sectors such as health and social care, construction, cultural industries, computing, science and technology, consultancy, legal and financial services and education and training firms.

Apart from his academic and professional interests, Dr. Johnson is also Past President of the International Lions Club of London Hornsey and represents the interests of a range of civic/community organisations, be they cultural, educational, faith, social and so forth.

The Guyanese-Caribbean born has an impressive track record, with a wealth of knowledge and experience to share, as evidenced by the following:

What drives you on a daily basis?
I am driven by personal and collective struggles of Caribbean peoples and other peace-loving societies worldwide. I am eternally committed to human development. We are blessed with various talents, as well as endowed with essential gifts, and the least we can do is put them to greater use. I believe the greater the struggle, the greater should be the effort to achieve the sometimes elusive goal of human progress.

Name someone who has been an inspiration to you and how they have done this?
Although my parents and grandparents are the greatest sources of inspiration, the elderly among us have been a strong influence on me - I enjoy both their wisdom and respect. I continue to draw strength from many of our African and Caribbean achievers, including our young people, many of whom are extraordinary models of enterprise creation and scholarship and who deserve public recognition.

You are involved in many projects, what is it that keeps you going?
Sincerity of purpose and a belief in staying power. I am constantly troubled by our inability to sustain many potentially brilliant initiatives we conceptualise. We seem to lack the strategic acumen or the unerring vision to see them through. This is one of our weaknesses as a people and I believe that I am well placed to support greater visioning in our quest to consolidate institutions and organisations established by us.

Who or what is your strength?
My strength lies in the power of good. This means, at all times, constructive engagement with people, institutions and societies working for the common good of all. In other words, the continuity of human civilisation through the Divine prism.

What is your vision for your future?
I would like to capture and encompass the vision of Caribbean businesses in global affairs. This will act as a catalyst to encourage and stimulate greater accomplishments in commerce and industry, while adding value to our world in terms of cultural, economic and social capital.

What can you impart to society in general or anyone in his/her quest to achieve/fulfil his/her potential?
A determined quest towards sound educational attainment. A persistent attitude towards higher learning. A perpetual commitment towards financial independence and collective self-reliance. Working towards harmonising our creativity and sharing information and knowledge on both traditional and modern forms of civilisation.
